Why the practice exists

Yard capacity is typically not assessed at all. Clients take the yard at its word that the slot, the tonnes and the manpower are adequate — and discover the constraint only in execution, when the work will no longer move.

Execution viability is more than a capacity number. It is whether the yard can load out the unit, whether the mooring and quay configuration will take it, whether the facilities match the specification, and whether the yard has a track record on this class of work. Those tests are rarely done before the subcontract is signed.

The practice exists to hold that file in one place: subcontract placement, follow-through in execution, and close-out. Client-side, that means managing the claims a yard will raise. Yard-side, it means preparing the claim that is actually due.

The work is specialised. Fabrication tonnes, pipeshop dia-inch, load-out limits, mooring configurations, construction sequencing and form-of-contract mechanics do not sit comfortably in a generalist consulting slide. They sit in a file. That is the product.

The bench is built from more than twenty-five years working in the yards — then specialised in commercial and scheduling. That is the combination: technical competence on how the unit is actually built, and the commercial file that follows it through close-out.
